Thomas Cobbold Memorial

"To the Memory of THOM. COBBOLD Common Brewer who departed this life April the 21st 1767 in the 59th year of his life" - memorial in St. Clements Church, Ipswich.

In 2002 Tolly Cobbold became part of Ridley's and the Cliff Brewery in Ipswich closed ending 256 years of brewing at that site. The company itself claims a history dating back to 1723 and this site is dedicated to the company, its history, its people and its pubs.

This site is designed to act as a repository for research and as a resource for those interested in Tolly's brewery and pub heritage.

If you see a Tolly Cobbold beer today it is either an old bottle or it has been brewed by Greene King at Bury St. Edmunds following their purchase of Essex Brewer Ridley's in July 2005. Nobody is quite sure what will become of the old Tolly Cobbold brands but they seem to be featured on an occassional basis by Greene King.

Please don't contact this site asking for brewery-related items such as beer, beermats or labels - this site is not connected to a working brewery!

Please do get in touch about Tollemache and/or Cobbold breweries or pubs and their operation.

The site has remained somewhat static recently due to lack of time but the beginnings of a pub list are now present and more early Cobbold history is being researched. A basic history of the Cliff Brewery is now complete but this is very much a work in progress.
